今年第23屆CASH流行曲創作大賽
請投我編曲的一首“1. 追追追”.

追追追
作曲：Kay Wai　　作詞：曾紀諾　　編曲: Jony C

I helped with this page for Sony GRO team for syndication to different countries. So far I found it on US and Canada. It may be live on other parts of the world.

One of the challenge was to make sure the JavaScript code (tho minimal) works on different frameworks. I wrote a “Agnostic.js” bridge to easily switch between prototype and jquery. I made it intentionally “dumb” so the developer can stub it out for their own framework if needed. It needs to be improved because it was a rush job. I think it works pretty well with jquery and prototype now. I wonder if there’s a place for such a library – Javascript Framework Agnostic adapter. Or it could just be polishing on turd.

Page on:

In April, I launched the redesign of Pacific Southwest Technologist Chapter Inc. (Society of Nuclear medicine) website for the Halogen Lab. One of the technical challenges was to migrate it from the old host sitting on a debian server. We switched the site from Java to PHP. Using the Smarty PHP framework, the code for the site is now separated between the frontend, backend and database. The smarty template system makes it easy for Front End developers (me) to make changes without worrying too much about affecting the backend of the website.

I like the reskining part of the job. I find it very satisfying to see the metamorphosis the site goes through. The biggest challenge had to be educating the clients. The stakeholders at PSTC are generally not very familiar with web development in general. We spent a great deal of time gathering and organizing the needed requirements and explaining why things are done in certain way and taking more time.

Taking the extra time was worth it as we wanted to make sure we have the right result. With the effort, the site went from being a totally amateur to professional and elegant.

Gone with the old, in with the new:

I’m looking forward to doing more of these, especially now that I don’t work on the web anymore. I miss the fast pace and the feeling of accomplishment launching beautiful designs and interactions.

Last Friday (July 22), the B’z came to perform at the Fillmore in San Francisco. I bought the ticket thinking it’s just another Japanese band. But then I started learning about them and realized I’m really lucky to have a ticket. This band plays in sold-out stadiums and they decide to do some “charity” work and play at the Fillmore – a small 1000-people place. The reason they play there eludes me. Perhaps there’s a novelty for musicians to play at the Fillmore as many international stars played there before.

About the B’z, the band is led by grammy award winning guitarist Takahiro Matsumoto, and singer Koshi Inaba. Their stage presence is excellent, superb, almost too perfect like choreographed. The band was always pitch-perfect. I could not find one mistake or missing note.

The atmosphere of the concert was amazing. No seats. Everyone was jumping and the floor was shaking like an earthquake had struck San Francisco for 2 hours. The Fillmore was small but really cozy venue. It was packed but not too crowded.

Some of my friends say it was the best concert they have ever been to. I definitely feel it was one of the best. I would definitely go to their concert again.

It was quite hard to get into Google+. As we speak, the service is exclusive and by invitation only. I missed the initial invitation but got in on the 6/29 when they opened it for a couple of hours.
Good things:

The user interface is clean

The privacy setting is easy edit for every single data field in your profile.

Each post can have different privacy settings

Instead of friend list on Facebook, the “circles” feature makes a lot of sense and much more easy to use with its drag and drop feature.

Befriending/Following someone do not require you to be their “friend”. You can follow someone much like you are on Twitter. But it is reciprocal, you will see more posts from that person.

A really nice feature is the Instant Upload feature on your android phones with Google+. Every photo and video will be sync-ed up to picasa privately and ready for you to share on Google+. This is really handy especially when there isn’t an easy way to upload videos onto Facebook from Android now.

Group video chat called “Hangout” is really good. I especially like being able to watch YouTube videos together. More kitty videos to watch… TOGETHER.

I like Sparks. It is a feature where you can pin up some topics (using keywords) and it will return results from the web.

Bad Things

Re-sharing loophole can be dangerous especially posts are default to be re-sharable. Yes, you can turn it of individually.

Somewhat confusing is the distinction between Buzz and Posts. Your buzz posts do not show up in your post section.

When you first join, it asks if you want to link up your picasa albums. All in the sudden, all your photos in picasa is available to your new friends. I wish there’s a better way to handle this initial link-up.

Sparks is nice but I’d like to be able to share my Google Reader feeds in Google+

Overall, I think Google+ is already a very good alternative to Facebook. It has some really good ideas like Hangout and Spark. I think with it’s strong existing user-base (i.e. gmail), it will definitely be a good contender to the social network giant – Facebook. Now if someone can please make a site that will consolidate all the social networks into one place, I would be much happier.

It was my very first E3 and it was really interesting. I went hoping to find some interesting games and innovative experiences. I went for only 2 days but I have to say it wasn’t enough time to try everything. I only had enough time to pick and choose what I wanted to try. E3 is like an amusement park. People were lining up to try the consoles or whatever each company had to offer. The obvious big players at E3 were the hardware makers – Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony. Each of these companies had their own futuristic 2-story structure inside the expo floor. I especially enjoyed Nintendo’s area as they had nice decor pretty girls manning the gaming stations Our area – Sony’s was nice too. They had at least 50+ PS3 on the floor, each loaded with different game demos. I played through a couple of them – Ninja Geiden, Silent Hill..etc.

The most hyped and secretive area had to be PSP Vita. There were about 20 of the PSP Vita inside this closed cubicle. The gaming experience is definitely different and more robust. I can imagine that the new generation of gamers will use all 5 fingers to play hard-core games on this device and doing amazing things.

There was also the Wii-U. However, I had no interest to stand in line for it (not because I’m from Sony but) because I had no idea what the press release said about it and from what I saw, I couldn’t see anything interesting with it, yet.

Last but not least, it was great to see the Video On Demand App on display.

My take-away? Buy PSP Vita!

This book is very good for intermediate to expert level JavaScript programmers, especially for tech leads. The book covers enterprise-level (Java) programming practices in JavaScript. There are many techniques worth knowing in JavaScript. If you are a seasoned web front-end developer, you may know a lot of these technique already.

Things I like about this book:

not written for specific JS framework (jQuery, prototype..etc).

explains some of the essential concepts in JavaScript clearly

goes over different design patterns one by one

examples are easy to follow

That’s all for now.

Yes. We screwed up. But I think people often too readily blame the problems on the big corporation. I think both our security AND the intruders are at fault here. Without the criminal act, we won’t have such a big problem. I still think Sony has a big responsibility when they are handling customer privacy.

I remember how the very first PlayStation site was – a badly designed, last-minute website which styles resembled a website from the 90s. But I – like many others, decided to put my credit card information on the site despite my doubts. I haven’t joined Sony at the time – or else I would’ve raised a flag about it. From a front-end developer point of view, that site was sub-par for a big corporation. I also wonder how much effort they spent on the back-end either. Now we know.

PSN should be back online soon. And I have a feeling that this is only the first of many cyber intrusions to come. The internet is a scary place.

I didn’t register to go to Google I/O this year. I just started to work on Android about a month ago so I missed the registration by a lot. My colleague -Kevin was kind and let me borrow his badge to check it out for a little while. I went there for a session on Android Development Tools and skimmed the exhibitions floors. The exhibitions were not impressive. The session I attended was informative. The conference was way too crowded. Overall, compared to Adobe Max (which I liked), this is relatively “light”. Nevertheless, the registrants got their money’s worth. They all got a Galaxy Tablet AND a Motorola Mifi hot spot. Consider the registration fee is only $550 and the selling price for the limited edition Galaxy tab on ebay now is $1250, I think I will register for the next Google I/O for sure. It might be challenging as the 2011 conference was sold out in 1 hour.

Question 1:

//What is i?
var i=0;
var add = function(){
++i;
    return function(){
        i++;
        return function(){

            add();
        }
    }
};
add()()();

Question 2:

//What is the value and data type of result?
var result = !!String("false");

Question 3:

//What is result?
var result = "1"+2+4;

Question 4:

//What is 'result' and why?
var result = (function foo(bar){
return !bar;

});

And you can clear the original combo and add your own combo this way. (You need to assign the ‘Key’ object has the keyboard key mappings you want.)

//KonamiCodeTrigger.clearCombo();
KonamiCodeTrigger.addCombo("" + KonamiCodeTrigger.Key.A + KonamiCodeTrigger.Key.B);

I have been working on SonyStyle.com for over 3 years. During this time, I helped change the face of the site. I developed or led the development of almost every movable part on SonyStyle.com – homepage, global navigation, shopping cart, checkout pages to name a few. I remember entering Sony Style as the sole front-end developer. Today, I co-lead a team of 8 developers. It has been a wild ride and a good learning experience. However as I flip into a new chapter of my career, I find myself having to leave this place that has helped me grow tremendously and enter into a new place to work and learn – within Sony. As of 9/27/2010, I will no longer be leading the SonyStyle.com front-end team.

I’m moving from Sony Electronics to Sony Corporate of America’s Sony Network Entertainment Inc. At SNEI, I will build Sony’s non-web experiences – such as device software and application. It will be a challenge as I have little experience with actual software development. I look forward to this opportunity as it will help me open up my horizon for new ideas and new projects.

In remembrance of my reign @ Sony Style, here are some screen shots of my contributions on SonyStyle.com today:

After my brother moved out and remodeling the house, I got an extra room for music recording. I’ve moved everything from the living room into the new music room. My friends would also cramp in there when we practice. One problem with a small space is room acoustics. It is fine for practice but I couldn’t stand the sound acoustics in my vocal recordings. So I decided to look at some acoustic treatments.

My room is 10′(W)x10′(L)x8′(H). I’ve laid carpet on the floor and I need to find some treatment for the walls, ceiling and the window. First, I looked into covering the whole room with acoustic foam. At musiciansfriend.com, they are $59 for 32 square foot(Auralex Studiofoam). The downside is they are not portable and the materials aren’t as durable. After some research, I found an alternative is to go with fiberglass acoustic panels, yet they are very expensive (about $100 – $150 for each 24″x48″x2″ panel). If I want 3 on each wall totaling 12, I will need to spend $1800. That’s a little much for my Chinese-penny-pincher self. So, I decided to do-it-myself.

To make your own acoustic panel, you will need to still buy fiberglass foam – I don’t know how to make them from scratch. I bought the ATS Acoustics rigid fiberglass boards. They are direct replacement for the more expensive Owen Corning 703 boards. I never compared them side by side. But when I put my ears next to the ATS boards, I hear dead silence which is good enough for me.

Here is a checklist of things I got:

2 packs of 6 ATS Acoustics rigid fiberglass boards (~$60 x 2)

24 yards Burlap mariners Blue ($50)

3 Sanded plywood 4′x8′ (cut at Home Depot into 12 2′x4′) – ($19 x 3)

3M Super 77 adhesive spray ($10)

Staple gun (I already own)

Staples ($3)

30lb picture hanger – pack of 14 ($10)

The total was a little less than $300 but I ended up with 12 acoustic panels that I would have spent $1800 for. Good deal!

Here’s what you need to do:

Spray board with 3M adhesive spray and place foam on top. Wait for 30 minutes for it to dry

Next I placed the acoustic boards on the burlap fabric and cut it. Make sure you leave enough room so you can staple the fabric onto the board in the back.

Spray fabric with 3M adhesive spray and stick the foam onto the fabric in place.

Staple the loose end of the fabric onto the back of the board.

Install wall hanger – remember to install them the same way.

Hang completed acoustic panel on the wall
